This Friday, Hamburg University of Technology celebrates the 20th anniversary of the "dual@TUHH" program. As the first dual study program at a technical university in Germany, this program was established in cooperation with the employers' association NORDMETALL back in the year in 2003. Since then, it has combined engineering studies with practice phases during the lecture-free period. More than 70 companies from northern Germany participate as partners in the study program. The program was recently accredited as an intensive study program. This means that in the future the practice phases will also be rewarded with credit points. This change already applied to the 75 new TU students who started their dual studies in the winter semester 2022/23.
14 bachelor's and 24 master's degree programs at the TU Hamburg can be studied dually. The standard period of study remains unchanged. The dual students can design their curriculum in the elective and specialization areas of the respective degree program individually and thus adapt it to company-specific needs.
Counteracting the shortage of skilled workers
"The study model is characterized both by the combination of engineering studies, application-oriented practical phases and integrated soft skills training, as well as by the close cooperation with the companies in the supervision of the dual students," says Dr. Henning Haschke, head of the "dual@TUHH" coordination office. "For the participating companies, the study model offers the opportunity to help shape the development of their specialists and managers and to bind them to the company in the long term."
For Managing Director Peter Golinski of the employers' association NORDMETALL, which launched the program in 2003 together with the Technical University of Hamburg, "the dual study program offers only advantages to the participating companies and the young dual students. The close link between theory and practice enables the students to start their careers much more effectively, and the companies thus secure sustainable young talent in the engineering field."
The event "20 years of dual studies" with more than 250 invited guests took place on Friday, June 02, from 15:00-18:30 in the Learning and Communication Center, Building A, at the TU Hamburg.
