The Academic Senate of the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) has approved the reappointment of Prof. Andreas Timm-Giel as President. The Advisory Board also gave its consent. This means he can remain President of TUHH until 2033.

For Timm-Giel, this will be his second term. Before starting his first term in June 2021, he had already served as acting President of TUHH since September 2020.

Prof. Andreas Timm-Giel: “I sincerely thank the Advisory Board and the Academic Senate for their trust and approval of my reappointment. This vote is a clear mandate for my second term and the future of TU Hamburg: With ‘Engineering to Face Climate Change’ and ‘Humboldt 4.0’ – the integration of focused research, cutting-edge teaching, knowledge transfer, and science communication – we are aligning our university with the major challenges of our time. This requires an open campus where people of all countries, nationalities, religions, and genders work, research, and learn together. I look forward to continuing to build an open and international TU Hamburg and to consistently expanding its successful path as one of the most innovative technical universities in Germany.”

Significant Increase in Performance

The record of TU Hamburg over recent years is very positive. Among the scientific highlights is the Excellence Cluster “BlueMat” with funding of around 70 million euros, as well as strategic major initiatives such as the establishment of the UNU Hub “Engineering to Face Climate Change.” Since 2020, TUHH’s performance in key areas has improved significantly. In that time, 46 professorships have been newly appointed, the number of first-year students in bachelor’s degree programs has increased by over 40 percent, and the proportion of international students now stands at around 30 percent. The university has also seen dynamic development in research and knowledge transfer: third-party funding income has increased by 75 percent, and funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) has risen by 135 percent. Additionally, around 27 million euros were raised in 2025 alone for innovation projects in teaching. In the area of spin-offs, there has also been encouraging progress: over the past ten years, more than 60 successful start-ups have originated from TU Hamburg.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Timm-Giel has been a full professor and head of the Institute of Communication Networks at TUHH since November 2009. His research focuses include mobile and vehicular communications, the Internet of Things, and future network architectures. From October 2014 to August 2020, he served as Vice President for Research at TUHH.

The formal reappointment of Timm-Giel as President of TUHH is carried out by the Authority for Science, Research and Equality (BWFG).
