In 2023, the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) generated an average of 697,400 euros in third-party funding per professorship – twice as much as the national average across all universities. This places it among the top group nationwide alongside RWTH Aachen (1,127,000 euros) and TU Munich (863,200 euros), as reported today by the Federal Statistical Office. Overall, in 2023, a professorship secured an average of 332,200 euros in third-party funds, representing a 2% increase compared to the previous year.

Senator for Science Maryam Blumenthal: “This success clearly demonstrates that the TUHH’s focused strategic profiling, combined with the city’s growth program, is paying off. Once again, TU Hamburg shows that when it comes to cutting-edge research at the forefront of the times, it is among the leaders. I congratulate the university’s executive board and all staff on this outstanding achievement.”

President Prof. Andreas Timm-Giel: “The high level of third-party funding impressively underlines the societal relevance of our research – especially in our flagship theme Engineering to Face Climate Change. I warmly congratulate the entire TUHH team on this success. My special thanks go to all researchers whose dedication has made this achievement possible.”

What is Third-Party Funding?

Third-party funding refers to funds obtained by universities to support research and development, as well as the promotion of early-career researchers and teaching, in addition to the regular university budget (basic funding), from public or private sources. These funds can be allocated to the university itself, one of its units (e.g., faculties, departments, institutes), or individual full-time researchers.

To enable comparisons between universities with and without medical facilities, the Federal Statistical Office’s statistics exclude medical facilities or health sciences of universities due to their exceptionally high levels of third-party funding.
