Over the past 20 years, something has significantly transformed our world and become a part of everyday life: the Internet. A remarkable development, according to Olaf Landsiedel, whose research focuses on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), for which it forms the foundation. “I am fascinated by how AI today rapidly drives change in numerous areas and how innovative tools like ChatGPT or Copilot are becoming increasingly popular,” says the Professor of Computer Science and Head of the Institute for Networked Cyber Physical Systems at Hamburg University of Technology (TU Hamburg).
The Potential to Improve the World
“I focus on how the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence, interconnected, have the potential to improve the world in many fields by promoting efficiency, automation, and sustainability,” explains the computer scientist. For example, smart thermostats in our living spaces will adapt to user behavior and thereby reduce energy consumption. On the streets, AI, based on sensor data from the Internet of Things, will be able to optimize traffic flow, reduce congestion, prevent accidents, and make mobility more efficient and pleasant for all involved. “The possibilities and advantages of intelligent connections and systems are endless,” the newly appointed professor at TU Hamburg enthuses. “The focus on cyber-physical systems and the many points of connection for research across the university as a whole convinced me to come to Hamburg,” Olaf Landsiedel recounts. Previously, he had been a Professor of Computer Science at Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel since 2018. From 2012 to 2018, he was first Assistant and then Associate Professor (tenured) at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, after spending two years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and the Swedish Institute of Computer Science (SICS) in Sweden. In 2010, Olaf Landsiedel earned his doctorate at RWTH Aachen University. His passion for research developed already during his master’s studies in the USA. “What I love most about research is coming up with new ideas and approaches together with my team and implementing them.” In addition to the advantages of TU Hamburg, the father of two and hobby athlete is also attracted by the vibrant Hanseatic city itself. He is particularly drawn to its waterfront location and the Nordic way of life of its people, and looks forward to getting to know the city better together with his family over the coming years.
