How can a university position itself to be internationally competitive? And what exactly does it strive to stand for in this context? In order to help clarify these and other questions, the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) has been offering the “Internationalization of Universities” audit for the past 15 years. From this year onwards, the Hamburg University of Technology will also participate in the program. In the process that is starting now and which will last a total of one year, the TU Hamburg would like to further sharpen its profile as an international institution.

In this context, several aspects will be discussed: the general conditions that currently apply, how globally oriented the university is at present and how it can be strategically developed in this direction in the future. To this end, an in-house project group at TU Hamburg will first draw up a status quo report; based on this, three consultants and other HRK employees will then recommend specific measures and discuss their implementation in workshops.

TU President Andreas Timm-Giel says: “Internationalization plays a decisive role in attracting the brightest minds and most talented specialists to Germany and mastering global challenges together. As Hamburg University of Technology, we are delighted to take a further step on our already successful path to internationalization with the HRK audit.”

About the audit
According to the HRK, a total of 111 universities in Germany have undergone the advisory and support formats of the “Internationalization of Universities” audit since 2009 - depending on their size in the categories audit, audit compact, audit strategy workshop and as a follow-up category for former participants in the re-audit. In addition to the TU Hamburg, the University of Hildesheim, the University of Education Freiburg and the Stuttgart Media University will also begin the audit this year.

According to the HRK, the audit stands for independent, needs-oriented, holistic and confidential advice on the further development of institutional internationalization and is offered at cost price. Upon successful completion of the audit, the university receives an electronic seal of participation.
