376 graduates of the Hamburg University of Technology were bidden farewell at the graduation ceremony on June 30, 2023 and received their certificates in person. The ceremony took place with about 1000 guests in the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle. In total, nearly 800 students, including 45 doctoral students, graduated from TU Hamburg in the summer semester of 2023.
Dressed in academic attire, with traditional sashes and hats, the graduates from 29 countries entered the hall to sustained applause from the audience. TU Hamburg President Andreas Timm-Giel welcomed the auditorium and congratulated the students on their achievements. "The graduates can be proud of their degree from TU Hamburg. They have been guided by us through a challenging course of study and are well prepared as ambassadors of the TU to use the skills and knowledge they have acquired to shape our future. Our society needs these outstanding engineers to mitigate climate change, to cope with its consequences, to enable the energy and transport turnaround, and to use technology to make our world a livable place for people."
Afterwards, the chairwoman of the board of the Joachim Herz Foundation, Prof. Sabine Kunst, addressed a few words to the graduates. "We can only meet the enormous social challenges around us with science and innovation - and with young people who have the know-how, the tools and the courage to make a positive change in our world. But we don't just need your expertise, we also need your skills as bridge builders to society, because that's where you need to create understanding for and interest in your ideas."
Speaking on behalf of all students was Maike Strecker from the master's program in shipbuilding and marine technology. She emphasized how important the sense of community is in the studies, because "none of us could have done it alone." She also expressed her thanks to all employees from science and administration at the TU Hamburg. The highlight of the event was the presentation of the certificates for the Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and doctorate in engineering. All graduates were invited to the stage by name and congratulated by the respective heads of the deaneries and examination board chairpersons as well as the festival organizer Bärbel Müller.
The evening was accompanied musically by graduates of the Hochschule für Musik und Theater under the direction of Thomas Haas. Alumni Coordinator Vera Lindenlaub and Alumni and Community Manager of the Northern Institute of Technology (NIT) Kristin Schreiber moderated the event.
