The Hamburg University of Technology is hosting the "International Seminar on Aerogels" for the fourth time, which will take place in Hamburg from September 28 to 30, 2022. More than 150 scientists∗, engineers∗, students and industrial partners∗ from all over the world will meet here, who work with aerogels and would like to exchange ideas on a professional level. Papers will be presented on a wide range of topics related to aerogels, including their synthesis, characterization and application. The seminar will be followed by the technical session of the European COST Action AERoGELS. There, the use of aerogels specifically for environmental and life science applications will be investigated in a multidisciplinary approach.

Highly porous and light as a feather
Aerogels are considered one of the most promising materials of the future. The lightest of all solids, they consist almost entirely of air-filled nanopores and are therefore ideally suited for use as thermal insulation, or for applications in the food industry and biomedicine. As an insulating material, for example, aerogels allow air and moisture to pass through them without losing their insulating properties, unlike conventional insulating materials.

Professor Irina Smirnova, head of the Institute of Thermal Separation Processes and Vice President Research at TU Hamburg, launched the "International Seminar on Aerogels" together with the "International Society for the Advancement of Supercritical Fluids" (ISASF) in 2012. Since then, the conference has been held every two years.
