The Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) performed well again in the fourth round of assessments by the U-Multirank global comparison of universities, as demonstrated by the published results of a survey in which nearly 1,500 colleges and universities in 99 countries were assessed in different areas, with grades ranging from A (Very Good) to E (Weak). The TUHH was rated either Very Good or Good in 20 categories.
U-Multirank, supported by the European Commission, measures annually different university quality criteria, ranging from study and teaching via research, knowledge transfer and internationality to regional commitment. “U-Multirank,“ says Andreas Techen, the TUHH’s Academic Controlling Officer, “does not calculate individually numbered ratings. The aim is to facilitate comparison of individual universities or study areas on the basis of a wide range of factors, thereby enabling users to draw up their own ranking on the basis of personal preferences and priorities, which can be a very interesting orientation aid for prospective students in particular.“
The TUHH, which other than the University of Hamburg and the Protestant College of Welfare and Social Work was the only Hamburg university to subject itself to this international comparison, fared especially well in Knowledge Transfer with four top grades, including one for industrial co-patents. Over 92 percent of its patents were developed jointly with business partners.
In the Research category the TUHH was awarded three top grades, further improving its third-party funding performance among leading international universities. In the Study and Teaching category the TUHH earned a Good rating for 94 percent of its students completing their Master’s course in the standard study period. Thirty-nine percent English-language master’s programs is another good result and a key indicator of an international outlook.
“I am delighted that we have fared so well again this year in the U-Multirank ratings with a large number of top grades,“ says TUHH President Garabed Antranikian, adding that “the results map our strong points very well.“

About U-Multirank
U-Multirank is an EU Commission initiative with financial support from the ERASMUS+ program. It provides students, universities, business and politics with comprehensive data to facilitate a performance comparison at both subject and university level. The fourth round of U-Multirank ratings covers nearly 1,500 universities in 99 countries, 16 study areas, and data on around 3,300 faculties and 10,500 subjects. The data is based on information provided by the universities, bibliographic databases, international patent databases and a poll of more than 100,000 students at participating universities.
