Decoupling economic growth from increasing human pressure on land and water resources

Economic growth has traditionally depended on energy production and resource extraction with increasing human pressure on nature. The specific linkages between GDP growth and the human consumption of land and water, however, remain understudied. Through an analysis of the food–energy–water nexus, this study examines the hydrological and land-use impacts of economic growth alongside the environmental trade-offs and structural limits of tech-driven carbon and water decoupling strategies. We show that decarbonization and clean energy transitions frequently shift environmental pressures away from climate warming and toward increased land and water exploitation, while also displacing ecological burdens across space and time. To mitigate these impacts, we highlight potential decoupling pathways driven by evolving consumer habits and demand-side moderation strategies.

03.11.2026 16:00-19:00

Join us for an inspiring networking event for female international students, high qualified alumnae, and role models who share migration backgrounds. This gathering offers a unique platform to exchange experiences and insights about building successful careers in Germany. Hear from accomplished professionals as they reflect on their individual journeys, revealing the key decisions and challenges they encountered during their job entry and while navigating the German labor market.

We are looking forward to the insightful talk and moderation about “Beyond Diversity: Between Opportunity, Stereotypes and Overadaptation at Work” by Dîlan Sina Balhan

What makes a career takeoff successful? What are the subtle cultural nuances and unwritten rules in German workplaces that newcomers often discover only through experience? Our models will openly discuss these topics, providing invaluable advice on adapting to professional life in Germany and highlighting strategies to leverage your migration experience as a strength. You will have the opportunity to pose your questions and engage in meaningful conversations that empower you for your own career path.

After the talk, we will enjoy our networking event with snacks and refreshments, where you can connect with peers, alumnae, and mentors in an informal setting. Whether you are just starting your career or looking to advance further, this event will inspire and support you in rethinking the power of your migration story as a foundation for personal and professional growth.

The event will take place in English, however it is possible to switch to German in the discussion and during the Role Model Sessions

12.11.2026 12:00-17:00

BEYOND THE PROMPT
Was KI kann. Und was Bildung bleiben muss.

Science and Art Slam der Hamburg Open Online University

12.11.2026 17:30-20:00

Career Center Workshop: Working in Germany

17.11.2026 09:00-12:00

A Practical Guide for Professionals

Why does your German manager's "helpful" feedback feel like a personal attack? Why do your perfectly polite emails get ignored? And why does everyone seem unfazed when you're mortified?

If you're planning to work in Germany—or already navigating German business culture—this workshop gives you what generic cultural training doesn't: research-based frameworks and immediately actionable strategies for your first job in Germany.

What You'll Learn: This isn't about memorizing stereotypes. Using evidence from cross-cultural management research (Erin Meyer's Culture Map, Hofstede, Hall), you'll decode the logic behind German workplace communication—from direct feedback styles to email expectations, meeting protocols to decision-making hierarchies. You'll practice handling uncomfortable scenarios through interactive role play, learn to separate task-criticism from personal judgment, and develop a personalized action plan for building credibility fast.

What Makes This Different:

Intellectually rigorous: Grounded in academic frameworks, not cultural clichés
Highly interactive: Role plays, case analysis, and peer discussion
Immediately practical: Walk away with templates, checklists, and a week-by-week roadmap
Valuable for everyone: Even German participants gain insight into how they're perceived

Who Should Attend: International students entering the German job market, international professionals, and anyone curious about strategic cross-cultural adaptation.

Your first job sets the trajectory for your entire career in Germany. Make it count.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Analyse their own communication style using evidence-based cultural frameworks (Meyer, Hall, Hofstede) and identify specific adjustments needed for German professional contexts
Interpret direct German feedback and communication patterns accurately, distinguishing between task-criticism and personal judgment
Apply strategic communication behaviours that build credibility within German organizational cultures
Navigate the paradox of German workplace hierarchy—formal structures with expectation of autonomous responsibility
Develop a personalized action plan based on cross-cultural adaptation principles rather than stereotypes

19.11.2026 16:00-19:00

This workshop is a great opportunity to check your job-readiness and improve your skills to get jobs successfully. Employability is more than just getting your „first“ job. The term encompasses all your abilities, knowledge and skills that make you ‚job-fit‘ (hard and soft skills) – and stay job-fit once you have a job. You will take stock of your employability, reflect on your subject competence and improve your personal, interpersonal and workplace related skills. By identifying your strengths and your biggest challenges, you can set milestones and goals for your next career steps. The workshop includes short presentations, solo reflections, partner exchanges and team excercises.

A few weeks after the training you will have the chance to meet again online and check in on your progress and topics, that you identified for yourself.
