Getting It Done! How to Complete Your Dissertation – Methods and Motivation

The “Getting it Done”-workshop provides you with the tools you need to tackle the final stage of your dissertation with as little hassle as possible: We discuss tried and tested methods which you will use to draw up a realistic project schedule. It is also important for you to keep working continuously until you finally submit the dissertation. To that end, you will learn how to develop strategies which will help you to cope with persistent levels of stress and strain. Depending on the specific needs and interests of the participants we will also focus on techniques for efficient writing, the topic of supervision and support, and questions concerning the defense.

Zielsetzung:
Die Teilnehmenden können mit Git und GitLab an einem gemeinsamen Code-/Text-/Datenprojekt zusammenarbeiten, dieses kontinuierlich im Team verbessern und bei Bedarf im Web veröffentlichen.
Inhaltliche Kurzbeschreibung:
GitLab ist ein flexibles Werkzeug, um gemeinsam digitale Produkte zu entwickeln. Software, Webseiten und -anwendungen, Datenvisualisierungen, aber auch Texte können mit GitLab geplant und umgesetzt werden. Dabei kommen verschiedene Konzepte, Workshops und Technologien zum Einsatz.
Der Workshop führt projektorientiert an entsprechende Workflows und Techniken heran und gibt praktische Einblicke in die folgenden Themen:
• Einführung in die Containervirtualisierung mit Docker
• Zusammenarbeit an Code, Daten und Texten mit Issues, Branches und Merge requests
• kontinuierliche Produktion mit Pipelines und Docker-Images
• Deployment von Anwendungen auf Webserver

Content Outline:
Scientific posters – vividly summarised – are the ideal form of presentation to effectively
communicate research to a conference audience, stimulate discussion and make important contacts.
To draw your audience in, you need a clear content structure, a text format optimized for
best readability and well-chosen graphics. Above all, you need to think carefully about how to organize
your research contents on the required A0-paper format.
Basic principles of graphic design and layout techniques will help you to present your research visually
perfectly organized and eye-catching. The course will equip you with both the concepts and the practical
design skills to compellingly design or redesign your poster during the practise session.
At the end of the workshop, you receive useful feedback from group and trainer, to know how to further
improve, optimize, and finalise your poster drafts.

Nach diesem Seminar wissen Sie, wie Sie mit Ihrer Stimme überzeugen können, ob bei einem Vortrag oder Pitch, in einem Gespräch oder in einer Lehrveranstaltung.
Inhaltliche Kurzbeschreibung:
Möchten Sie andere Menschen mit Ihrer Stimme begeistern, sich Gehör verschaffen, sich weiterentwickeln in selbstbewusstem Auftreten und gewinnendem Ausdruck und Ihre Botschaft wirklich rüberbringen?
In diesem Seminar werden Ihnen die Tools dafür vermittelt. Sie lernen anhand von praktischen Übungen alles, was Sie für einen erfolgreichen Auftritt brauchen. Im Stimmtraining werden der Atem, die Stimme und die Präsenz trainiert. Wir gucken, welche Haltung ideal ist, suchen den persönlichen Stimmklang und trainieren unsere Sprechwerkzeuge für eine klare Artikulation. Anhand kurzer Texte üben wir den gelungenen Aufritt.

Keeping your Talk Fresh: Storytelling Techniques for Scientific Presentations

This is an activity-based workshop, led by a theatre professional, whose expertise is in eliciting the researchers’ narrative, identifying the speaker's authenticity as a storyteller and supporting the speaker to effectively communicate the importance and relevance of the work and the core message in the talk. Participants learn narrative techniques, practice telling stories and integrate these techniques into their talk. The seminar provides participants the opportunity to connect a narrative to their core research, build the story, create suspense and anchor points of reference throughout the talk with their story. Additionally, they will learn to develop a protagonist and learn how to "chunk" or segment units of action in the talk.

Raus aus der Selbstkritik - Selbstakzeptanz und innere Stärke entwickeln

Zielsetzung:
Eine positive Einstellung zu uns selbst und den eigenen Herausforderungen stärkt unsere psychische Gesundheit, verhilft zu mehr Gelassenheit und damit zu größerer Problemlösekompetenz. Mit Selbstachtung können wir uns von innen stärken und gesünder leben. Techniken, sich selbst zu regulieren und Gedanken zu steuern, können trainiert werden.
Inhaltliche Kurzbeschreibung:
In das ein oder andere Fettnäpfchen zu treten und Fehler zu machen ist menschlich und gehört dazu, wenn wir uns entwickeln wollen. Leider können wir manchmal trotzdem nicht akzeptieren, dass etwas schiefläuft und tendieren dazu, uns z.B. zu schämen oder sehr selbstkritisch zu sein - oft sogar deutlich kritischer, als andere unsere Performance bewerten würden. Diese Bewertungsspiralen können blockierend wirken und Handlungsmöglichkeiten reduzieren und viel Energie dafür binden, „uns wieder in Ordnung“ zu bringen. Doch: Wir können lernen, uns aus der Falle destruktiver Gedanken und schwieriger Gefühle der Selbstabwertung zu befreien. Schon ein Moment, in dem wir wertschätzend mit uns umgehen, kann unseren Tag verändern.
Themen im Seminar sind:
• Welche Werte/Glaubenssätze beschäftigen mich in der Selbstkritik?
• Wie verlasse ich Missbilligung und Verurteilung meiner Fehler und Schwächen?
• Wie finde ich zu einem wertschätzenden Umgang mit mir selbst?

Project management in an academic environment means: putting a project into effect alongside many other activities as quickly as possible, with great complexity and with the participation of highly diverse interest groups.
With the help of your own project - your doctorate – you will “live through” your project from the beginning till the end – having the doctoral degree. It will help you to structure your doctoral phase and to integrate all other goals and activities of your live which are important for you.
You are going to get an overview of your project, set goals and analyse your stakeholder. You are going to structure your project and to define milestones. At the end you’ll have an overview of the entire project that allows you to be the master of your project.

Introduction to the Rules of Good Scientific Practice

Goals:
Based on the DFG-Recommendations and Guidelines “Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice (2013 and 2019), the participants will get an overview about the rules of good scientific practice and how to deal with cases of scientific misconduct. Frequent areas of conflict and the grey zone between questionable research practice, violation of rules and misconduct will be elucidated. Based on case examples of data management, authorship and publication process, and supervision, the concrete implementation will be presented. An overview of the German ombuds system will be illustrated, and the participants will learn to develop appropriate solutions to conflicts and other difficult situations in the process of science. They will have the possibility to ask questions and to resolve lack of knowledge and uncertainties related to the practical handling of Good scientific practice in everyday work.
The content of the course follows the curriculum “Good scientific practice” which was commissioned by and developed in cooperation with the German Research Ombudsman and revised in 2019.
