Legend has it that German taxes are complicated. Well, there’s good news and bad news. The good news: German tax laws and regulations aren’t rocket science. The bad news: German tax laws and regulations don’t necessarily follow a logical pattern; some even say they’re a ‘tax jungle’.
But here’s more good news: on June 26th, you have the chance to get an overview of German taxes and some basic rules:
- Do I need to take the first step and register with the German tax office – or can I simply wait until the authorities ask me to file a tax declaration?
- What about “employment”, “freelance”, “working student”, “minijob” and “Werkvertrag” contracts?
- How to submit my tax declaration? The options are: do it online, download software, hand in paperwork …
Joachim Holstein, tax coach at the AStA of the University of Hamburg, will guide you through the tax jungle. Questions are welcome … and feel free to bring your laptop/tablet as well as your 11-digit TAX ID (“Steuer-Identifikationsnummer”, “Steuer ID”).
