Surface Hydrology

Course Units (new window)

Instructor:

Peter Fröhle

Course Format:

1 hour Lecture, 1 hour Exercise

Period:

Winter Semester

Language:

German

Recommended Previous Knowledge:

good knowledge on differential and integra calculus

Contents:

In the lectures and the exercises the students will be introduced into the main principles of Surface Hydrology, namely:

the hydrological cycle, data acquisition in river hydrology, data analysis and first statistical analysis, extreme value statistics, regression models for determining hydrological parameters, rainfall-runoff-modelling on the basis of the UH-principle.

Each topic will be finished with questions about the key knowledge and example problems will be give to the students to deepen the knowledge.

Learning Outcomes:

Learning the basic elements of Surface Hydrology, including demonstration of hydrological cycle over ground. Presentation of the main tasks in Surface Hydrology, e.g. Hydrometry, management of hydrological monitoring systems, determination of hydrological design parameters, statistics of observed hydrological parameters.

Giving students an understanding of the basic problems in Surface Hydrology and how to solve them.

Getting the competence to apply the principles of Surface Hydrology  to many problems in River Basin Management
